What each of us actually does, including where we lose
One row below is a "no" for everybody, ourselves included, and two of our yeses come through Cleo's and IBM's products rather than anything we built ourselves. A comparison where the author wins every line is an advertisement; where a yes is earned through a partner, the cell says so in words.

Disclosure: we are one of the options below, and we are a Cleo partner. Read this knowing that. We have tried to describe each provider as their own customers describe them, and we have included the cases where we are not the right answer.
SPS Commerce
Network + full-service managed EDI- Best for
- Retail suppliers who want EDI removed from their plate entirely and whose partners are already on the SPS network.
- Worth knowing
- Customer reviews cite support thinning at scale and implementation timelines stretching. Templated maps handle standard requirements well and bespoke logic less well; no QuickBooks integration.
TrueCommerce
Platform + managed options- Best for
- Mid-market companies wanting one vendor across EDI, marketplaces and ERP connectors, with broad pre-built coverage.
- Worth knowing
- Reviews frequently mention slow support response and long onboarding. Pricing is not published anywhere, which makes budgeting a conversation rather than a calculation.
Cleo
Integration platform (EDI + API + MFT)- Best for
- Organizations that want visibility and self-service control over their own integrations rather than a black box.
- Worth knowing
- Genuinely capable platform. With 4,000+ customers, a mid-market account is a small account. Cleo now sells managed services directly, in competition with its own partners.
Orderful
API-first modern EDI network- Best for
- Technical teams who want to integrate once against a modern API and have developers available to do it.
- Worth knowing
- Reviews cluster on implementation rather than product: "difficult setup requiring programming skills" and long go-lives. EDIFACT support is still maturing.
Effective Data
Consulting-led services, platform-agnostic- Best for
- Companies with legacy or mixed environments, unusual partner requirements, or no in-house EDI expertise who want a named EDI specialist accountable for outcomes.
- Worth knowing
- We sell and implement Cleo and IBM platforms rather than building our own. If what you want is a single self-service product with a license key, we can set you up with one, and if another provider fits you better we will say so.
The pattern in the reviews
Reading customer reviews across all four platform providers, one theme repeats with unusual consistency: complaints concentrate on implementation, onboarding and support rather than on the software.
That is not a criticism of any individual company. It is what happens when platforms scale. The product matures and the human layer gets spread thinner. A supplier with an unusual pack configuration and a go-live date becomes a ticket in a queue.
We mention it because it is the honest reason a smaller consulting-led firm can still win work against companies with far larger engineering teams. It is not that the platforms are bad. It is that a named EDI specialist who answers the phone is a different product.
Questions to ask any provider
- What happens at double our current volume? Get the overage number in writing.
- Is onboarding a new trading partner included, or billed? This is where quotes diverge most.
- Is a map change support or a project? Partners change requirements constantly.
- Who is accountable at 2am when a document fails? A name, or a queue?
- What does leaving look like? If nobody can answer, that is the answer.
Frequently asked
+ Which EDI provider is best?
There is no single answer, and any page that gives you one is selling. The honest split: if your trading partners are all mainstream retailers and you want EDI to disappear, a network provider like SPS fits. If you want control and visibility, a platform like Cleo fits. If you have developers and want modern tooling, Orderful fits. If your environment is messy, legacy, or unusual, or you have nobody in-house who knows EDI, a consulting-led firm fits.
+ Why is EDI pricing so hard to compare?
Because almost nobody publishes it, and the pricing models are not alike. Some charge per document, some per kilocharacter, some per trading partner, most combine a platform fee with usage. The number that catches people out is overage once a tier is exceeded. Ask every provider the same three questions: what happens at double our current volume, is a new trading partner included or billed, and is a map change support or a project.
+ Do we have to replace our current provider to get help?
No. A meaningful share of our work is managing environments the client already owns, alongside platforms we did not sell them. Being required to migrate as a condition of getting support is usually a sign the provider only supports their own stack.
+ Is Effective Data a Cleo partner or a Cleo competitor?
Both, and it is worth being straight about that. We are a long-standing Cleo partner and implement Cleo where it fits. We also compete with Cleo's own managed services offering. If Cleo is the right platform for you we will say so; whether we or Cleo should run it is a separate question with an honest answer either way.
Want a second opinion on a quote you have received?
Send it over. We will tell you what it actually covers and what it will cost at volume, whether or not the answer is us.
Or call 847.969.9300Answered by a named EDI specialist on the same business day. If we are not the right answer we will say so on the first call.
